ADD Treatments and ADD Symptoms

ADD Treatments and ADD Symptoms

Before we discuss ADD treatments and ADD symptoms, let's briefly discuss ADD itself....

Millions of children in the US are believed to suffer from ADD--Attention Deficit Disorder.

Some estimates currently approximate up to an astounding 5% of school aged children have this condition. The exact cause of the disorder is still unknown, but it is believed to have a neurobiological basis, in addition to a possible hereditary component.

ADD is classified as a behavorial disorder, and ADD symptoms can be manifold.

There are even diffrent types of ADD and ADHD such as ADHD inattentive, or ADHD characteristics in adults.

ADD Symptoms

Some of the more common ADD symptoms include: inability to concentrate, easily distracted, inability to follow through or carry out tasks, short attention spans, problems in organizing, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity.

ADD Treatments

There are various treatments as discussed briefly below.

Prescription ADD Treatments

The more medically accepted ones include prescriptions, Ritalin being the most well known. Dexedrine is another medication that is often prescribed for adolescents with this condition.

These medications clearly have their benefits, but they also have potentially adverse side effects.

It's important to carefully discuss these with your physician.

To learn more about their side effects, please see our page ADHD medication side effects.

Psychotherapy ADD treatments

Included within this group are such tactics and techniques as individual counseling and training. The objective here to provide careful attention to the special educational and socialization needs of ADD children so that they later on become functional adults.

Dietary/Nutritional Treatments

Some Naturopathic doctors believe that the growing ADD problem is in part the result of today's poor nutritional choices of many children.

For example, there is a raging controversy on the effects of sugar with an ADHD child.

There is also a now known link between ADHD/ADD and an Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency.

The best choice, many believe, is natural medicine for ADHD

A few even believe that the best treatments are dietary changes and not prescription drugs, which they argue only treat ADD symptoms and not underlying causes.

Common nutritional/dietary protocols include: eliminating or severely restricting sugar, dairy, and products made with white flour from the diets of children with ADD.

For more on this, please see our page ADHD diet.

An interesting case on just how important the effects of proper (and improper) nutrition can be on children's behavior, discipline, and ability to learn can be read at a newsletter called XTEND-YOUR-LIFE.

We highly recommend you read it and subscribe to the FREE newsletter now. It is one of the best resources for Alternative health we've ever come across.
