What is the Cause of Thinning Hair; What are the Available Thinning hair products?
Cause of Thinning Hair
Before we discuss thinning hair products, let's briefly address the causes of thinning hair...
It seems, unfortunately, that the primary cause of thinning hair is genetics and hereditary factors.
That is, someone with thinning hair probably had relatives who suffered the same problem. Because thinning hair is often out of our control, many people turn to thinning hair products for help.
There are, however, some external reasons that are often cited for thinning hair:
1. Use of steriods. Many experts believe that elevated levels of testosterone is linked to hair loss, and, therefore, use of steroids may also be a cause of thinning hair.
2. Stress and Anxiety can be a cause of thinning hair.
3. Certain diseases, such as that of the thyroid, and certain infections, particularly that of the scalp, such as dermatitis, or scalp psoriasis, can not only be a cause of thinning hair, but also clumps of hair falling out.
4. Certain medications--such as accutane, birth control pills, anti-depressants--can lead to hair loss, and, therefore, probably also thinning hair.
Biologically speaking, many women develop thinning hair due to fluctuations in estrogen levels or overproduction of DHT. In the case of men, it is primarily the DHT that is the cause of thinning hair and hair loss.
DHT is a by product of testosterone, which can bind to hair follicles and cause them to shrink.
Many thinning hair products work by combating the culprit DHT.
Thinning Hair Products
There are a wide range of thinning hair products on the market, from prescription drugs to natural alternatives.
One of the biggest selling thinning hair product is Minoxidil, which is a drug approved by the FDA for thinning hair.
Other thinning hair products /medications include Rogaine and Propecia. These drugs would need to be discussed carefully with your doctor, as they can have a range of side effects.
Thinning hair products that claim to be all natural usually entail a topical formula that must be applied and rubbed into the scalp. Many of them work by trying to counter the effects of DHT.
Special shampoos are also available as thinning hair products.
Still other thinning hair products and treatments include surgical procedures, such as transplanted hair, which entails removing hair from areas where there is currently hair growth and inserting them in areas where there is none, or where it is thinning.
Closely discuss such procedures with a qualified expert.
