Cure for Macular Degeneration

Cures for Dry Macular Degeneration

Many people are looking for a cure for macular degeneration...

Macular degeneration is the single leading cause of blindness and vision loss in adults over the age of 55.

Currently, it affects over 10 million adults in the United States, and 30 million adults worldwide. Health officials expect those figures to triple by the year 2030, as the Baby Boomer population ages.

The causes, treatments and possibility for a cure for macular degeneration are the subjects of a multitude of studies being conducted worldwide.

What is macular degeneration?

Age related macular degeneration is a condition that damages and eventually destroys the soft tissue of the macula, an area of the retina. This tiny area is responsible for central vision, the vision that we use for reading, driving and other activities that require detailed vision.

Before we discuss if there is a cure for macular degeneration, let's delve a bit deeper.

There are two forms of age related macular degeneration.

The first, the one we will concern ourselves with here, dry macular degeneration, is characterized by the formation of small, granular deposits of fatty acids called drusen.

These drusen gradually decrease visual acuity, and eventually lead to the loss of central vision and distortion of detailed vision. Dry macular degeneration accounts for approximately 90% of all cases of age related macular degeneration.

Because 90% of all cases are age related it's little wonder lots of people with this condition are searching for cures for dry macular degeneration.

What causes macular degeneration?

Studies over the past twenty years point to a number of risk factors that increase the probability of age related macular degeneration. Among these are age, gender, race, diet, smoking, obesity and hypertension.

While there is not yet a cure for macular degeneration, these same studies, particularly several in the past five years, do suggest a number of lifestyle changes and strategies that can prevent macular degeneration and slow its progress, and in at least one case, begin reversing the devastating effects that age related macular degeneration has on the vision by increasing the intake of lutein, zeaxanthin and zinc in the diet.

Studies suggest that a diet that is low in fat, rich in leafy green vegetables and fish, and supplemented with a combination of lutein, zeaxanthin and zinc can decrease the risk of developing macular degeneration by as much as 45%. While it's not a cure for macular degeneration, it seems to be the next best thing until one is found.

So, until science finds cures for dry macular degeneration, here are...

Specific Recommendations for A Diet to Improve and Preserve Vision

  • Lose weight.

  • Cut down on fats from your diet.
