Herbal Impotence Cure...
The popularity of many kinds of centuries old treatments for impotence has renewed in recent years.
Scientists and researchers are taking a second look at such widely reported herbal impotence treatments as gingko biloba, Korean red ginseng, maca, yohimbe and the aptly named horny goat weed.
What they're finding is the surprising news that many of these traditional herbal impotence treatments may have some basis in scientific fact.
Before you go trotting off to the local vitamins store to stock up on one of these herbal impotence cures, though, be aware that their claims are not yet backed up by carefully controlled double-blind clinical trial - the litmus test for declaring that a treatment works.
Their claims for successful treatment with herbal impotence cures are based largely on anecdotal evidence.
However, for some people, anencdotal evidence is enough for them to want to try a product, even a herbal impotence treatment.
Just keep in mind that some of these ingredients may have side effects, and you should talk to your doctor before you try any.
Let's get a bit deeper in this topic before we talk about the so called herbal treatments.
- What causes Impotence?
Impotence is not a disease, but rather a symptom of an underlying cause. For decades it was believed that impotence was caused primarily by psychological factors. It's now known that over 75% of all cases of impotence have an underlying physical cause. This is in part, the reason for the new interest in traditional so called herbal impotence cures.
When the penis is stimulated, the nerves surrounding it send a signal to the brain to send more blood to the veins in and around it. This blood fills two sacs, engorging them and causing stiffness and erection.
Once the penis has achieved an erection, the blood vessels leading away from the penis constrict, trapping blood in the penile sacs until orgasm triggers a message to relax them.
Many of the herbal impotence treatment that are cited as effective either improve the circulatory system or treat one of the disorders that cause impotence.
Any herbal impotence treatment that treats one of the following disorders or promotes overall health may have the side effect of improving male erectile function.
- Diabetes - Hypertension - Deficient blood flow to the penis - Excessive drainage of blood from the penis - Damage to the nerves around the penis - Hormone abnormalities - Side effects of drugs - Alcoholism and drug abuse - Heavy smoking - High cholesterol - Diseases affecting the erectile tissue of the penis - Stroke and neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis - Kidney and liver failure
In addition, since the ability to achieve and maintain an erection is connected to a man's self-esteem and comfort, psychological factors affect impotence.
Impotence has been linked to stress, marital or partnership problems, worry at work, unresolved sexual orientation and sexual boredom. Because of this, so called herbal impotence cures that include herbal stress reducers may help in relieving male impotence.
- Traditional herbal impotence cures
Before we continue any further, it's important to say that there are no impotence "cures" per se. However, people often associate the word "cure" and "treatment" in their mind, even though they are not the same.
So, whenever you read herbal impotence "cure" please just realize it is not a true cure, but may nonetheless help improve the condition.
Research has identified several herbs used in herbal impotence cures that have a higher incidence of evidence backing their use.
Their claims have been tested at such places as the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute and the University of Peking. These herbs include:
- Horny Goat Weed
Horny Goat Weed is a mainstay of many herbal impotence cures. A tea brewed from its leaves has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as an herbal impotence treatment for over 2000 years. In 1985, a study at the University of Peking backed the traditional herbal impotence cure with these findings:
Horny goat weed contains a potent bioflavinoid, icariin, which is a PDE-5 inhibitor. It slows the breakdown of nitric oxide in the body - one of the keys in treating impotence. Icariin is the main active ingredient in horny goat weed, but it's not the only reason that this traditional herbal impotence cure may be effective.
Horny goat weed contains natural chemicals that increase the body's production of epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine, all of which affect sexual function. It brings down cortisol levels, which are implicated in depressing sexual desire.
Finally, it helps restore both testosterone and the thyroid hormones, improving the sex drive. With all that going for it, it's not surprising that this herbal impotence treatment is one of the most used worldwide.
- Allium Sativum
That's garlic. Yes, common garlic. Studies at both the University of Mexico and the Institute of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy in Munich, Germany showed that garlic helps nerves in the body react to the presence of nitric acid.
There is also a lot of evidence to support the role of garlic in treating many of the underlying disorders that cause impotence, including heart disease, high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis.
- Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo biloba is one of those herbal impotence treatments that treat the whole body, not just the condition. One of its most notable effects is improved vascular function.
In 1991, a study reported in the Journal of Sex Education Therapy found that in 20 men who'd taken ginkgo biloba daily for at least six months, 100% reported improvement in their ability to have a sustained erection.
- Catuaba
A tonic brewed from the bark of the catuaba tree is a traditional herbal impotence cure and aphrodisiac used in Brazil. It seems to work by increasing circulation to the genitals, though it also is used to aid in reducing hypertension.
- Maca root
Maca is native to Peru, where it has been used for centuries to improve the libido.
This traditional herbal impotence treatment doesn't have a direct effect on erectile function, but its effects on the nervous system and in regulating testosterone and other hormones may aid in restoring flagging sexual desire.
- Yohimbe
Perhaps one of the most popular herbal impotence cures. An extract of yohimbe, yohimbine, is proven effective in restoring erectile function. However, because of its possible serious side effects, it is not recommended for use without the strict supervision of a doctor.
Before starting ANY course of treatment for a suspected impotence problem or any other suspected medical ailment, see your doctor.
A doctor can help determine if your impotence problem is caused by another disorder that requires medical intervention.
