Relieving Constipation

Relieving constipation...

Constipation is loosely defined as the occurrence of hard, and dry, bowel movements that occur at an average of less than three times a week.

Those affected by constipation may find the process of having a bowel movement to be both difficult and painful. Other common symptoms are feeling bloated, uncomfortable and an overall feeling of being sluggish.

There are several approaches that one can take when releiving constipation. Let’s consider each one individually.

We also have additional pages on this topic, such as home remedies for constipation and chronic constipation.

  • Diet:

By adding a certain amount of fiber to your daily diet (about 20-35 grams each day), stool production is usually soft and regular. Appropriate fiber supplements may be used or foods that are high in fiber content (such as beans, whole grains and bran cereals, and fruits and vegetables) will also get the job done. Also, avoiding over-consumption of foods that are very low in fiber may be beneficial, such as dairy products, meats and processed foods.

  • Changes in lifestyle for relieving constipation:

Other everyday changes that can help with releiving constipation are: drinking more water and other helpful fluids, such as fruit and vegetable juices. Clear soups broths are also suggested to be helpful in relieving constipation. Additionally, a regular exercise plan and, maybe most importantly, making time to have a bowel movement and/or not trying to avoid having one when the urge is obvious.

  • Laxatives:

These are probably the most common therapy in relieving constipation people think of when they feel constipated. However, there are several different types of laxatives to consider.

Bulk-forming laxatives: Safest for use over-the-counter, but some evidence suggests that they may inhibit the absorption of other medications by the body. This is the group of laxatives that are known as the fiber supplements.

Stimulants: These are designed to increase muscular contractions in the intestines.

Stool Softeners: These substances are used in releiving constipation by assisting to provide moisture to the stool to prevent the hard stool from forming. One regularly used product example would be Colace.

Lubricants: These substances actual coat the stool in a substance similar to grease, and allow stool to move more freely through intestine. A good example of a lubricant is mineral oil.

Saline laxatives: These substances are designed to draw water into the intestines to allow hydration of the stool during the passage through the intestine.

Other constipation cures are discussed as well.
