The Effects of Sugar with an ADHD Child
The effects of sugar with an ADHD child is becoming more and more studied and discussed.
It is still controversial with some experts claiming it does not impact the behavior of a child with ADHD and others (usually people in the natural health field) who claim that it has major adverse effects.
What's most likely true (because of large studies) is that sugar in the diet will not cause ADHD itself.
But the question is: does it exacerbate the condition in kids who have ADHD?
There is a mountain of anecdotal evidence that it does.
In fact, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that junk food and sugary snacks will negatively effects kids regardless if they have ADHD or not. And it's also known that ADHD children often have abnormal sugar metabolism to begin with, which perhaps makes them more susceptible.
We here at Beat Your Health Condition have 3 children and irrespective of the fact that none of them have ADHD the last thing we are going to feed them is sugary snacks or junk food.
The Effects of Sugar with an ADHD Child
There's an interesting story we'd like to relate...although it does not deal specifically with the effects of sugar with an ADHD child, we think you'll find the results of this study thought provoking and relevant to the issue.
One testament to the power of a proper diet in the behavior of kids was witnessed about 8 years ago at a school called the Central Alternative High School in Appleton in Wisconsin.
The school was rife with disciplinary problems from the students. Then, in 1997 a local business named Natural Ovens implemented a Nutrition Program in the school based on a wellness diet.
Steps included: eliminating soda (high in sugar, high fructose corn syrup) and vending machines that sold junk food.
The school's menu was then switched to one that consisted of fruits and veggies, whole grains, healthy stews and healthy entrees, drinks made up of fresh fruit and ground flax seeds, the latter of which are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, a crucial nutrient for mental development.
The resulting changes were amazing: After four years on the program there were:
- no drop outs
- no students expelled
- no students discovered to be using drugs and more...
Even shortly after the program, improved attention, attendance and cooperation were all reported.
This experiment, although not scientific, shows very strong anecdotal evidence the impact of a proper diet.
In our opinion, parents who have children with ADHD or not, should consider a similar diet to the Wellness program that this school implemented.
This is the kind of diet we give our own children.
